This course aims at familiarizing students with different techniques and skills for understanding reports, dialogues and conversations. These skills include listening to a conversation for specific details, as well as enhancing the listening skill through rile-play from prepared dialogues. The basics of intonation patterns of spoken English are also stressed.

The course emphasizes writing at the paragraph level. Methods of sentence combination into a sequence conveying a central idea of thought are introduced and employed in the composition of descriptive, comparative and explanatory paragraphs. Also this course teaches the student how to make use of the library and how to apply documentation principles and research techniques in academic research writing.

This reading course is designed to help students master the foundational reading skills of word recognition, vocabulary, development, and basic comprehension. To improve reading skills, students practice their writing skills as reading and writing are related skills needed for success in college.

This is a writing course that builds and refines skills learned in an earlier in Writing course. It integrates advanced-level writing and critical thinking skills. Students will select and apply appropriate writing strategies to complete academic paragraphs and essays. Grammar structures will be reviewed and practiced as errors occur in writing.

The present course covers articulatory description and production of the full range of possible speech sounds. It focuses on place and manner of articulation and how to transcribe words and short sentences.

This course deals with phonemes, phonotactics and morpho-phonemics. A variety of approaches are considered from classical structuralist phonology to generative phonology. Practical problems from English and Arabic will be tackled. Focus will also be made on consonant cluster.

This course concentrates on grammatical categories i.e., parts of speech, noun phrase, verb phrase, adjectives and adverbs, and prepositions are studied. It is meant to prepare students to the subsequent more advanced course 317.

This course concentrates on the main sentential phenomena such as expanded simple sentence, complex sentence with relative and other subordinate clauses, compound sentence, etc. Other topics include particular passive and morpho-syntax of (phrasal-verb) idioms.

An introduction to translation which aims to familiarize students with the field of translation and the skills necessary to work as successful translators. Emphasis is placed on a problem-solving approach, supported by text analysis (both in the pre-translation phase and in subsequent editing evaluation). Practical tasks will involve translation into Arabic.

This course covers the Romantic period till today. Poets and poems representative of the Romantic period and the other periods are studied in their literary and historical contexts. The list of poets represented here may include such names as William Blake, W. Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge, P.B. Shelly, J. Keats, Lord Byron, Hopkins, Thomas, Dickens, Frost and others.

This course is devoted to the study of English, American, and World short stories. Many outstanding short story writers have been selected. The focus will be on the analysis of plot, characters, setting, conflict, themes, symbols, style and point of view. Students are expected to be well- acquainted with the characteristics of the art of modern short story after the course ends.
