As a compulsory department requirement, this Course will lay the theoretical foundations toward a science of translation. It discusses some philosophical aspects about having a particular theory of translation. Topics like formal and dynamic equivalence or correspondence, form and content orientation in translation and meaning-transference are discussed. Such influential theorists as Nida, Catford, Newmark and Baker are eventually discussed.

As a compulsory department requirement, this Course is mostly a support to simultaneous and consecutive translation. Sight translating in particular involves fast reading, skimming and scanning skills for speeding up reading and getting the gist of a given text in the shortest possible time. Students need to analyze texts in details, tell what type(s) they are/shall be and, then, exercise focusing on meaning rather than the form attempting to use an efficient rephrasing/paraphrasing technique.

As a compulsory department requirement, this Course is an introductory course designed to develop consecutive and simultaneous interpretation skills. Development of skills enhances self-confidence of interpreters. Other skills such as note-taking, using signs, and prediction are also emphasized. It gives an idea about the role of the interpreter, the theory and method of interpretation and ethics of the profession.

As a compulsory department requirement, this Course attempts to translate a wide variety of texts in all fields of knowledge. It concentrates on building students' skills in actual practice of translation and addresses in some detail the issues involved in the process of translating a text, and how translators deal with problems of text in context. During this Course, topics will differ in their subject matter, scope and targets.

It investigates differences between English and Arabic. The focus is on selected areas of the sound system, word formation and grammatical and syntactic structures found in both languages.

As an optional department requirement, this Course, students will attempt to analyze and compare translations of religious sacred/unsacred texts. Various translations of the Holy Qur'an, Prophetic Hadith, commentaries and Da’wa efforts worldwide as well as other religious texts in reference to the Bible will be discussed. The characteristics of religious texts and the proper approaches to translate texts will be stressed.

As an optional department requirement, this Course basically attempts to involve the BA students with the theory and practice of tourism and its terminology. Students in this particular Course are introduced to types of texts on the tourist sites in Jordan and abroad and trained on how to render such texts into a completely different language. The language of tourism and/or recreation is getting increasingly important nowadays.

As an optional department requirement, this Course is designed to train students on how to criticize translations on academic and objective bases rather than subjective prejudice. Translations of well-known published works will be put under focus in order to see their merits and demerits on syntactic, lexical, and stylistic levels. Comparisons of translated works will also be included to sharpen students' sensitivity towards, and awareness of translation problems.

As an optional department requirement, this Course focuses on the significance of the role of situational context in understanding the intended message of a text. It focuses on conversational Implicature as a process in which the speaker implies and a listener infers. Simply put, students in this Course will study language that is not directly spoken and discuss why meanings differ in different contexts. It also deals with the role of culture in determining the meaning.
